platform blues

I would like to start this post by stating that I do not always have the perfect shoes for each of my work outfits. I have been searching all summer for dark brown, open toe shoes that fit my annoyingly narrow feet. So, occasionally I have to wear a tan colour shoe that doesn't always work with my brown slacks.

However, the other day I saw a co-worker in cute black slacks with white platform flip flops. I hate platform flip flops and I also hate dirty white platform flip flops. The next day I saw her in a black skirt, black shirt and the dirty white platform flip flops. The platform sandal rarely looks good on anyone. It makes your calves look bigger and you're not fooling anyone with those extra inches. If you want height, go for cute heels. Also, the flip flop should be reserved for casual wear not work. Lastly, it's just not fashionable to wear white shoes with an all black ensemble. Red heels? Sure. White embellishments on your shirt or pant with white shoes? Possible. But the white platform flip flop rarely works with anything and just looks silly. (As a side note, the picture above was featured on a site for bridal shoes. If I ever see something resembling that on a bride, I'll shudder.)

that's quite the shoe. trying to make something so casual look all lacy is just wierd.

i am really content at work when i have my [non platform] flip flops on... thanks for the birthday present. This summer i am doing a litfle part time work where i can't really wear them as the dress code is business casual (blahech), and i feel like my feel are suffocating.

I read an article not long ago where people were losing promotions at work based on the way they dressed. Flip flops were usually part of that equation. Course, there's a double standard, really ... the ladies can ALWAYS get away with the open toe shoe at work (at least mine), whereas the guys are frowned upon for wearing flip flops. It's not very fair. Remember this ... socks are, and always will be, the enemy.

Flip flops should only be worn to work if you are a lifeguard.
Socks and sandals are on the other hand not as much of a taboo in Iceland since it is rearly warm enough to go without socks and sandals are just so comfy. My boss actually once sent home a girl who wore no socks with her sandals in the middle of the summer. She thought is looked shabby, I pointed out to her that the other girl helping out, had no socks on eather but she was dainty and had painted tonails and cute girly sandals, when the other on was kind of big and had on cluncky platform sandals and no painted tonails. Double standard, she just didn´t like the platform sandal girl. (My boss actually went and apolagizied to her after I pointed this out.)
Anyway, horrable bridal shoes

dainon, i can understand your pain. there aren't many open toe dress shoes for men (if any). however, in winter most of us women have to deal with awful nylons with our dresses etc. so, i guess we all equal out during the different seasons.

dagga... socks with sandals? zoinks. i'll forgive because of where you live.

when my family travels we travel as light as possible. this means we bring only sandals as our footwear. if it's hot we can enjoy the coolness of sandals and if it's cold, we wear socks with them. my husband has even gone so far as to get some of those socks with toes in them so that if theopportunity arises, he can wear socks with flipflops. those socks just feel gross to me though, and i've never been a fan of the flipflop. but i do wear socks with sandals. gasp. i know. it's a fashion faux pas but for travelling purposes it is the most practical when you have 3 kids and like to travel light.

Socks with sandals are a no-no, but practically a staple in the Beehive State. As commonplace as green Jell-O and bad drivers, really. Pity.

Oh those shoes! I actually saw a pair almost like these just the other day and thought most of the same things you did. Especially the part about them being dirty and impossible to clean.
About the socks...When I got accepted to BYU, my mom, of course, really wanted me to go. And I did eventually, but I remember saying, how could I go to a school that required guys to wear socks all the time, even with sandals. I think the dress code said something like "the no-sock look is not permitted". One it's not my favorite looks to wear socks with sandals, and two, that seemed like such a minor thing to try to patrol. The dress code has now changed, but lots of guys still wear socks with their sandals. "Raise up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he shall not depart from it" or something like that I guess.

I helped a friend out with a wedding she did the flowers for. I don't know what shoes the bride was wearing, but the groom was wearing dirty white flip flops with his tux. Now, I would give some allowance if it was on the beach, but it was a formal ceremony at an old, beautiful church. All of the groomsmen had on appropriate shoes. Tacky. The poor photographer had to worry about not capturing the feet.

Being from Oregon, the thick wool socks with birkenstocks were all the rage during the 80's and 90's. And unfortunately, I was a member of that scene. Luckily I grew up and actually looked in the mirror.

i'm not a fashionista, i am into what is comfortable. i'd wear flipflops (i still call them "thongs") the rest of my life if i could, they make my feet happy.
and if my feet get cold i wear socks with sandals! gasp!
i don't care what anyone thinks.
i find those shoes only as stupid as i find any other platform shoe, or high heel, which is pretty stupid.

The other shoe I think is disgusting is the flip flop with a kitten heal, usually seen in clear plastic. Now, those are painful on the eyes.
